GIMP vs Photoshop: Is the Free One Good Enough in 2026?
Jul 26, 2026
Photoshop is the industry standard, but GIMP is free. Here's when each makes sense.
Where Photoshop wins
Adobe Photoshop leads on advanced retouching, AI tools, CMYK/print workflows and a massive plugin ecosystem — worth it for pros.
Where GIMP wins
GIMP is free forever, does 90% of what most people need (layers, masks, filters, retouching), and runs on modest hardware.
Verdict
Hobbyist or on a budget? GIMP is more than enough. Doing paid client/print work? Photoshop earns its keep. Painting instead? Try Krita. More in Graphics & Design.
